Hello
I read all your articles, I do have fond memories of these instruments and I was in charge of training and setting up all the service centers in the USA. I worked in New Kensington Pa. from somewhere in 73 to 75 until they moved to NY. I know the plant well it was the old Alcoa Plant, it is still there, I still see many ex employees who built them. I too was a musician and used the Optigan as a cheap mellatron, although you had to adjust the head everytime you moved it,as Yes, King Crimson, and others were big at the time. I wish you luck in your endeavor, and it is suprizingly pleasant to see interest in this machine. Has anyone seen Jack Smith?
thank

Thanks Pea for posting something about Mark's death. I too was introduced to the Optigan after hearing Sparklehorse. I was fortunate enough to meet him a couple of times and the last time we talked a little about Optigans.

This man was a huge influence on not only my music, but the way I look at the world.

It is so sad that he is gone, and I for one now feel quite lost without the comfort of knowing that he is somewhere out there making music.

Such sad sad news. An absolute hero of mine. It was his music that introduced me into the optigan world. Years later I bought Mark's Mellotron from him, and talked with him quite a bit about stuff. A real gentleman, whose work was incredibly influential on me. May God bless him, his family, and us fans.

I cannot believe there is so much interest in these , I worked as a service training supervisor and set up and trained service centers all over the country in the 70's. I find the optigan a unique instrument but yes very flawed in quality. A great idea, I can still see and hear these in my sleep, The instruments were all assembled along with the Estey reed organ at the old Alcola Aluminum plant in New Ken. Pa I still know others who worked there. I had bought one for my Mother for Christmas, although she passed in 2005 I don't know where the optigon is. Thanks for the memories.

Hello
Optigon , Miner Industries, New Kensington Pa brings back the memories, both Jim Rice and I worked in the service dept as supervisors, during that period I replaced Jack Smith which I has lost touch with a long time ago. I can still see these in my sleep

Fairly sure I heard a quick Optigan rhythm sample in a Ford commercial recently. Couldn't recall which one offhand, but has a percussive Hammond type groove.
